Frequently Asked Questions

Differences between the content on the home page of timesfreepress.com and the Full Access - Electronic Edition

All the content links available off the home page are free local content and are available today. Breaking News and other web-centric content (podcasts, blogs, audio, video, downloads, etc.) are updated throughout the day and can be found in their archives on the site once they are more than 24 hours old. These are usually found at the bottom of the most recent posting or can be found through the "Search" at the top-right of the home page. The last 7 days of articles are available in the Full Access - Electronic Edition as they were printed with all the photos, graphics and advertisements. After 7 days, all local news coverage goes into the newspaper's Digital Archives.

To get the Full Access - Electronic Edition, you have to be either a print subscriber to the newspaper, or have an Online-Only subscription. Full Access is free to all subscribers of the print edition of the Times Free Press. For those who are not subscribers, it is easy to view and read the complete newspaper online. You can get the "Online-only" version for the small amount of only $4.95 per month or select "Single Day Access" (24 hour subscription) for only $1.00. If you are interested in signing up, you can register with either the monthly "Online-Only" or "Single Day Access" here.

What is the "standard edition"?
The new standard edition is an HTML version much like our old Web pages, but in a new framework that matches the enhanced version's framework. The main page displays a lead item from each of the day's major news sections. The headlines and section headings are clickable links, just as on our old home page. Blue bars on the left of the page also link to the news sections. Each section index gives headlines, first paragraphs and bylines as before, but in more legible type.

What is different about the "standard edition"?
The new wider framework.
Region articles are in the Metro/Region section.
Religion is in Saturday Features.
Weekend is only in the enhanced edition.
It's posted later. Because of production constraints, the enhanced edition usually is posted around 4 a.m., and the standard edition is posted after the enhanced edition.

What is the "enhanced edition"?
The enhanced edition is a compilation of page reproductions, including advertisements. The elements of a page are clickable and separately viewable in either text or image formats. An entire edition may be downloaded in "Page High Res" format, a PDF version of the edition. The article view window also has icons to e-mail a link to the article to a friend or to prepare a printer-friendly version.

How do I navigate the "enhanced edition"?
Scrolling over the page will highlight pieces of the page in blue on a PC. The highlighting is absent on a Macintosh, but the function is the same. Clicking on a piece will bring it up in a preview window; clicking on a headline will bring up the entire article and associated text or images in a display window. The display window offers a choice of views: text (HTML) or paper (image of the article and all associated elements as they appear on the newsprint page). In the blue bar at the top of the browser window, date and section pulldowns and a page number box with forward and back arrows allow access to any page in any section in the chosen issue.

Does this work on all Web browsers?
Older browsers do not comply with all of the Web standards used in the new framework. Internet Explorer 5.0 and Netscape 6 or newer are recommended. PC and Macintosh versions differ slightly: The Macintosh does not have the highlighting feature in the enhanced edition.

Does one's internet connection speed matter?
The enhanced edition works best on DSL or cable connections. Downloads will be slower on anything les than a 56K modem. If one only has a dial-up connection (56K modem or less), it is recommended to use the Standard Edition.

When are the daily editions available?
Our target is to have all online editions available by 6 a.m., to coincide with our newsprint delivery. The enhanced editions are produced after the newsprint editions go to press, and the standard edition is produced from the enhanced editions. Generally, the enhanced edition will be available around 4 a.m. The standard edition generally will be produced last. All editions should be available by 5:45 a.m.

Do you have a guide to using the Full Access - Electronic Edition?
You can download a PDF guide on how to use the Full Access - Electronic Edition here.

How do I switch between editions?
The standard version displays "electronic replica" icons linking to the enhanced edition at the top right of index pages. The enhanced editions contain "standard edition" links above the advertisers box at the top right of the browser page.
